Quilt Competition for Mimi's Mission

  |  Published: Oct 28th 2012

Wendover MakeClub is a group of mums from the local schools, plus some very hip Grannies too, who meet once a fortnight to share a love of modern sewing. We make quilts together for our families and friends and as expressions of our love and friendship to those who touch our lives. Many of us have kids who know and love Mimi, and as a group we wanted to help Mimi's Mission by donating some of our time and skills.

Back in January we turned out our fabric bags and began the laborious task of preparing more than 225 hexagons to turn into a quilt. Each woman donated her favourite fabrics to make hexagons, including some precious scraps from Mimi's Nana Netia. There was no colour plan or prescription initially but as a result, a riot of colours was tamed into a wonderful rainbow pattern, and each woman was returned a row of hexagons to sew together, then pass to her neighbour, and 'join on'. The finished quilt includes pieces of fabric that mean something to every woman who helped to make it. The quilt travelled around the village through the spring slowly growing this most fantastic vibrant rainbow!

The quilt is now on show in the window of Cromptons Interiors on High Street in Wendover. It represents the combined hours of work of 15 women, over a period of nearly a year. It has been made almost entirely by hand. A lucky person can win this quilt for the princely sum of two pounds! All we ask is that you accurately guess how much time the quilt took to make - 100% of the money raised will go to Mimi's Mission. Simply purchase an entry card for £2.00 from Cromptons or wherever you see the Mimi's Mission poster, make your guess and deposit your card in the Mimi's Mission tin. Please contact Jane Atwell (Mimi's Mission - jane_chris@hotmail.com) or Debs McGuire (Make Club - plainstitchdeb@yahoo.com) for further information about the above. The quilt winner will be announced on Monday 17 December.
